Designing with light is becoming very popular and using light to create added interest is all the rage in today's home.

One way to leverage this technique is to use a floor spot light and aim it upwards at particular decorative item. For example, large plants or potted trees can create a wonderful pattern on the wall when lit properly.

Here's how to make it work for you :

• Place a spot light on the floor near a large potted plant or tree. For the best look, try to hide thefixture behind a piece of furniture, basket or another item situated on the floor.
• Angle the light to beam through the leaves, aimed approximately two-thirds of the way up the wall. This will produce a contrasting pattern of shadows and light on the wall for a truly unique look, similar to a textured wall, but without all the effort and cost.
  

In addition, the light showcases the plant and can brighten a dark corner. Using light to highlight design elements will give your room a fresh, modern feel that is unusual and very distinctive.
